Romance in Tortola, British Virgin Islands

by: Ellen Keralla

To most visitors, the islands are really all about sailing. One can charter a yacht with a crew or attend a recognized teaching school for sailing. For me, it was finding a romantic hotel to send my honeymoon and anniversary clients to visit.

Tortola is one of the many British Virgin Islands. Just 60 miles east of Puerto Rico lay the West Indies. These islands are accessible from the air via San Juan or by a 15-mile ferry via St. Thomas (approximately $50/person/round trip). The islands were named one of the top ten Caribbean islands for 2006 in the Conde Nast Traveler. The 12 inhabited islands have villas, apartments and resorts to choose from. Finding the most romantic on each island is my personal quest. I specialize in Romantic travel and I try to find at least one great property on each island I visit to share with my clients.

The BVI, as those in the know refer to them, are an overseas territory of the United Kingdom even thought the U.S. dollar is the only legal tender. To most visitors, the islands are really all about sailing. One can charter a yacht with a crew or attend a recognized teaching school for sailing. For me, it was finding a romantic hotel to send my honeymoon and anniversary clients to visit.

A wedding in the British Virgin Islands will be memorable and stress-free. A marriage license is simple to arrange and the certificate is valid in the United States. I was able to witness one of those stress-free weddings at the cozy and romantic Sugar Mill Hotel. The rain forced the wedding to take place under the large, tree-shaded alfresco gazebo. With twinkling lights, flowers and ribbons the ambiance was definitely romantic.

The Sugar Mill Hotel is set in a lush tropical garden among the ruins of a 17th century sugar plantation. According to Conde Nast Traveler 2006, the Sugar Mill Hotel is one of the top 5 in the Caribbean. The critically acclaimed cuisine in the historic stone building once housed the plantation’s rum distillery. The food is a culmination of Caribbean ingredients meets California cuisine in an imaginative, award-winning menu that changes nightly.

Across the street from a small white sand beach in reef-protected water this resort is located on the west side of the island. Travelers from the U.S. must remember that driving is on the left side of the road. I suggest a taxi from the airport. Car rental can be arranged at the Sugar Mill Hotel if one is so inclined.

The hotel has a honeymoon suite located very near the restaurant. Although superbly appointed, this stand-alone unit is too close to parking and the pool for me. I much rather prefer the Plantation House Suites. They are designed to reflect the charm of the traditional Caribbean architecture, with fine stonework, breezy porches and lacy gingerbread trim. These rooms are just a few steps from the beach. With an open plan layout, each master suite has a king size bed, large bathroom with double sinks a living room are with sofa and chairs, cable TV, VCR and kitchenette with microwave and refrigerator. Steep hillsides give all guest great views of the ocean and some neighboring islands.

The honeymoon package for 7 nights includes deluxe accommodations, bottle of fine champagne, 3-day jeep rental, 1-hour massage, full day sail to neighboring islands including lunch and drinks, gourmet picnic for two, a bottle of Sugar Mill rum, welcome cocktail and a copy of the Sugar Mill Caribbean cookbook written by Jeff & Jinx Morgan – Bon Appetit columnists. Breakfast and dinner can be included in your daily charge.

If low key and relaxing is what you are looking for than this island resort is for you. Not for the physically challengedScience Articles, this hotel is for a few special people whom enjoy getting to know the staff and other guests.

by: Brad Hunter

Imagine an idyllic, sun kissed cruising region, endowed with smaller uninhabited isles with quiet anchorages, washed by the cooling Caribbean trade winds. Envision no more! That area is the British Virgin Islands. The BVI's are one from the foremost cruising grounds in the world, providing short day sails among sheltered bays full of colorful sea life.

Picture an idyllic, sun kissed cruising area, blessed with small uninhabited islands with tranquil anchorages, washed by the cooling Caribbean trade winds. Picture no more! That location is the British Virgin Islands. The BVI's are one of the best cruising grounds in the world, providing short day sails among protected anchorages full of colorful sea life.

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are a group of isles found between the Caribbean Leeward islands and Puerto Rico. The four principal islands of the BVI are Jost Van Dyke, Virgin GOrda, Anegada, and Tortola, which hosts the capital Road Town. The rest of the islands are made up of 50 or so little isles and Cays. Arrivals are in the Lettsome Airport Terminal located on Beef Island a short distance from Road Town.

There are numerous methods of experiencing the BVI's but one of the greatest would be to book a yacht and explore the several bays and cays that dot these stunning islands.

Using a crewed charter, the crew is there to pamper for your needs. The crew understand the area and wind flow patterns very well and this knowlege can make the difference between a holiday which is fraught with difficultiesFree Reprint Articles, and one which will live in memory as the best you have ever had.

The very simple crewed charter no matter the kind of vessel which is being chartered will have a captain onboard. They realize that the very best sundowners may be found in Soopers Hole and where all the best fishing spots may be found. Virgin Islands Boat Rental - Are The USVI America’s Best Kept Secret?

by: Grey Beard
I am always surprised when speaking about the Virgin Islands to other people, how many have absolutely no idea where the Virgin Islands are, that there are, in fact, U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as British Virgin Islands, or that they are a really cool place to go.  Here are some of the best reasons why the USVI and the BVI might be considered America's best kept secret.

I am always surprised when speaking about the Virgin Islands to other people, how many have absolutely no idea where the Virgin Islands are, that there are, in fact, U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as British Virgin Islands, or that they are a really cool place to go.

Virgin Islands 101If you are one of the many that don’t know much or anything about the Virgin Islands, I’ll get you up to speed... First, the Virgin Islands comprise of 4 U.S. Virgin Islands, and 4 main islands, with another 50 or so smaller islands and cays. The U.S. Virgin Islands Islands are St. Thomas (Commerce center, an airport, etc.) St. John, which is mostly National Park Property, Water Island, and St. Croix (Situated 40 miles South of St. Thomas).  The British Virgin Islands include Tortola (Commerce center, airport), Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke.
The Virgin Islands are located in the Caribbean, about half way between Florida and Venezuela. In Fact, St. Thomas is only 78 miles from Puerto Rico, the U.S.’s other Territory in the area.

Caribbean Feel, No Passport Needed OK, enough with the geography lesson, what makes the Virgin Islands so cool?  Well, they are Caribbean Islands, with the really clear, warm water associated with the caribbean, but they are also U.S. Territories, which means if you are an American citizen, you don’t need a passport to go there, they speak English, and use U.S. Dollars.  So, you get the caribbean island vibe, feel, and lifestyle, but still have the U.S. support.

Virgin Islands Dotting The HorizonOne of the things I like most is being able to look out from the east end of St. Thomas, and seeing St. John, as well as some of the British Virgin Islands as well.  Some places, like the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and The Cayman Islands are really flat, and when you out to sea, it’s pretty much just the water line in view.  The Virgin Islands are very hilly, and close together...great views and some protection from hurricanes.

Virgin Islands Boat RentalsThe other huge benefit of the close proximity, is that you can fly into St. Thomas and get a Virgin Island boat rental that will take over to the British Virgin Islands.  One for the bib draws to the British Virgin Islands are the really cool Beach Bars.  Jost Van Dyke is host to a number of the bars that are literally, right on the beach.  And what a beach!  White bay is home to the Soggy Dollar bar, named for the fat that there are no boat docks for the Virgin Islands boat rentals to dock, so patrons have to swim ashore with their “Soggy Dollars.”

Norman Island, believed to have been the inspiration to the novel Treasure Island, is home to Pirate’s Bight, bar and also the Willy T, which is a floating pirate party barge.
So if you like snorkeling with turtles, rays, beautiful fish and coral, or like pristine beaches, or fun beach bars, consider the Virgin Islands for your next vacation. Don’t forget to get a BVI boat tour to really experience the best of the Virgin islands.

Yacht Charter in the British Virgin Islands

by:  Ken Jones

The British Virgin Islands are one of the Caribbean's most popular yacht charter destinations and Tortola is home to the world's largest fleet of charter yachts. You can choose between Skippered or bareboat charter, motor or sailing vessels, monohulls or catamarans as well as crewed, luxury or mega yachts. There is something for everone in the BVI. The short distances between the islands, often only 2 to 3 hours, make the British Virgin Islands perfect for the first time yacht charter.

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is a British overseas territory, located in the north of the Caribbean Sea to the east of both Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. They are part of the Leeward Island chain. The approximate co-ordinates are 18° 20' N 64° 40' W. The archipelago of the Virgin Islands archipelago is made up of the US Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

The British Virgin Islands enjoy a sub-tropical climate, moderated by the trade winds. Temperatures remain fairly steady year round with a daily maximum of around 29°C in the summer and 25°C in the winter. The BVI averages about 115 cm of rain per year, although this is higher in the hills and coast is drier. The wettest months are September through to December. The British Virgin Islands are in an area that can see hurricanes from June to October and this effectively limits the sailing season to November - May.

Amongst the many attractions on the British Virgin Islands are the; numerous white sandy beaches; the baths on Virgin Gorda, snorkelling on the coral reefs near Anegada; the well-known bars of Jost Van Dyke Island.

The British Virgin Islands include the main islands of Anegada, Jost Van Dyke, Tortola and Virgin Gorda together with over fifty other smaller islands and cays. The smaller islands include; Beef Island, Cooper Island, Ginger Island, Great Camanoe, Great Thatch, Guana Island, Mosquito Island, Necker Island, Norman Island, Peter Island, Salt Island. Only some fifteen of the islands are inhabited. The BVI are mostly volcanic in origin and have a rugged, hilly terrain. Anegada is the exception and is a flat island composed of limestone and coral. Tortola is the largest island, approximately twelve miles long and three miles wide. Road Town, on Tortola, is the capital of the islands. The British Virgin Islands have a total population of around 22,000 people.

The Virgin Islands were first settled by Arawak Indians from South America around 100 BC and inhabited the islands until the fifteenth century when Carib Indians from the Lesser Antilles Islands displaced them. The first European sighting of the Virgin Islands was in 1493 by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the Americas. He called them Santa Ursula y las Once Mil Vírgenes (Saint Ursula and her 11,000 Virgins); this was shortened to Las Vírgenes (The Virgins).

In the early sixteenth century the Spanish Empire acquired the Virgin Islands and developed copper mining on Virgin Gorda. Subsequently the English, Dutch, French, Spanish and Danish all sought control of the Virgin Islands. They became a notorious pirate haunt. During the process of European colonisation the native Amerindian population was all but wiped out.

In 1648 the Dutch established a permanent settlement on the island of Tortola. The British captured Tortola from the Dutch in 1672, and the British annexation of Anegada and Virgin Gorda followed in 1680.

The Virgin Islands were considered principally a strategic possession, but were also planted when there were favourable economic conditions. The British introduced sugar cane that became the main crop and source of foreign trade. Slaves were brought from Africa to work on the sugar cane plantations and the islands prospered until the growth in the sugar beet crop in Europe and the United States reduced sugar cane production significantly.

In 1917, the United States purchased St. John, St. Thomas and St. Croix from Denmark for US$25 million, renaming them the United States Virgin Islands and the British renamed the islands they controlled as the British Virgin Islands. The British Virgin Islands were administered either as part of the Leeward Islands Colony or with St. Kitts and Nevis, with an administrator representing the British Government on the Islands. Separate colony status was gained for the British Virgin Islands in 1960 and they became autonomous in 1967.

Since this time the BVI have moved away from an agricultural economy towards tourism and financial services and have become one of the richest areas in the Caribbean. Politically tourism is the more important of the two employing large numbers of the local population and many of the businesses are locally owned. However, economically, the financial service sector is by far the more important and provides nearly 50% of the Government's revenues in the form of licence fees for offshore companies.

The Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport, also known as Beef Island Airport, has regular connections to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Saint Thomas, USVI. There are also flights from most of the major islands in the Caribbean, Antigua and Saint Martin. It is located on Beef Island, just off the eastern tip of Tortola. Virgin Gorda and Anegada have smaller airports. The islands are a popular destination for cruise ships in the Caribbean and they use the British Virgin Islands main harbour in Road Town on Tortola. The official currency of the British Virgin Islands is the US dollar. Major credit cards are honoured at the larger BVI establishments but do not expect to use them at small restaurants.

The traditional music of the British Virgin Islands is called fungi after the local cornmeal dish with the same name, often made with okra. The special sound of fungi is due to a unique local fusion between African and European music. The fungi bands, also called "scratch bands and use a great variety of instruments. Fingi is a form of festive dance but also contains humorous social commentaries and is a source of BVI oral history.

The British Virgin Islands are one of the Caribbean's most popular yacht charter destinations and Tortola is home to the world's largest fleet of charter yachts. Prospective charters can choose between Skippered or bareboat charter. Motor or sailing vessels. Monohulls or catamarans. The short distances between the islands, often only 2 to 3 hours, make the BVI perfect for the first time yacht charterer and for families with young children. There are many flights to the BVI making access easy. On the downside the BVI can become crowded at peak periods; Christmas; Presidents Week and the Easter holidays. The first two weeks of July are also extremely busy due to Puerto Rico’s holiday schedule. Charter Yachts require a National Park Permit; ask your charter company for more details.

Moorings are increasingly popular throughout the British Virgin Islands to prevent anchors dragging on the bottom and damaging the important coral reefs. Although the cynics will tell you it's also about revenue raising and at $30 per night it is hard not to sympathise with this point of view. Overnight moorings are on 18” white balls. Other mooring buoys will be encountered while sailing in the BVI and are colour coded as follows;

Orange - Non-diving, day use only.
Yellow - Commercial dive vessels only.
Large Yellow - Commercial vessels or vessels over 55' in length
White - Non-commercial vessels, for daytime dive use only.
Blue - For dinghy use only

Also note that there is a 90-minute time limit on all moorings.

The major harbour in the British Virgin Islands is at Road Town, on Tortola. And most charters will start and end here. Village Cay Marina is one of the full service marinas available in Road Harbour offering fuel, water, ice, provisioning, laundry, shower facilities, beauty salon and spa. There is a fresh water pool and a waterfront restaurant and bar. Other marinas in Road Town Harbour include Fort Burt Marina and Inner Harbour Marina. There is also another full service marina in Nanny Cay that offers another starting point for yacht charters. The Nanny Cay Marine Centre has amenities including showers, water, gift shop, laundry, ice and fuel, provisioning, storage lockers and two restaurants. There are also a dive shop, mechanical repairs, refrigeration, welding and a 24 hour chase boat service. Allow time at the beginning or end of your yacht charter to explore Tortola. Driving around the island's steep and winding mountain roads offers some breathtaking views. Some of the finest beaches in all of the BVI are located at Cane Garden Bay and Long Bay, on Tortolas's north shore. Restaurants on Tortola are held in high regard throughout the Caribbean. Shopping and nightlife tend to be low-key, but a selection of small clubs playing local music can be found in Road Town and in the beach bars around the Tortola.

West End is shown on the charts as Soper's Hole, a protected harbour lying between Frenchman's Cay and Tortola. The Soper's Hole Wharf and Marina offers a full range of services located in charming colourful houses. The Pusser's Landing features waterfront dining in two restaurants and bars, an outdoor terrace and the company store.

Jost Van Dyke Island was named after a Dutch pirate. It has beautiful beaches, great food and music. Jost Van Dyke is the home to the famous “Full Moon” parties held at Foxy’s and Sidney’s Peace and Love Bar.

Anegada Island is known for its beautiful pink, sugar sand beach and snorkelling with age-old shipwrecks and coral reefs. Anegada's Reef Hotel is renowned for the local lobster. The dining room and bar are directly on the beach. If you go ashore on Anegada carry bug spray with you. You have been warned!!!

Moorings are available and anchoring is possible all along the coast of Virgin Gorda. Or you can get a berth at the nearby Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour, a marina with docking for 110 vessels, where the ferry arrives for land travellers. Shops are concentrated around the Yacht Harbour area, especially at the Courtyard. Virgin Gorda Island is famous for The Baths, a day filled with cave exploration and water holes within this unique rock formation. Dinghies are no longer allowed on the shore here and you must swim from a dinghy mooring to the beach. The Bitter End Yacht Club is located in North Sound and is a great place pick up a mooring. You will be amongst some of the beautiful yachts in the BVI here. The small deserted island of Prickly Pear is a great lunch and snorkelling spot and is just a dinghy ride from the Bitter End Yacht Club. Spanish Town on the southwest side of Virgin Gorda is a popular stop over for shopping and provisioning.

Norman Island or "Treasure Island” as the locals know it is home to the pirate ship “William Thornton”. Legend suggests this to be the fabled site of Long John Silvers treasure trove. Norman Island lies close to the boundary line separating the BVI from the US Virgin Islands. Although uninhabited it is alive with tourism. The caves here are one of the most popular tourist attractions in the BVI. This is a popular overnight anchorage and many charterers will take dinner aboard the Willy THealth Fitness Articles, a 100' steel schooner.

Remote Controlled Power Boats - Exciting Facts Revealed

By : Abhishek Agarwal

Many around the world enjoy the thrill of a powerboat and many enjoy remote controlled vehicles, and by combining the two you have a great hobby and sport, remote controlled powerboats. The boats are based on their life-sized counterparts and are usually scaled down models. They are controlled by radio control and are either recreationally run or raced in the water. Some of the boats are as slow as tugs or cabin cruisers, and some as fast as actual speedboats, all depending on their engine power. The three main types of engines are electric, gasoline or nitro-powered.

Electric RC boats use six to twelve NiCad batteries. In general there are quieter and more eco-friendly than their gasoline or nitro cousins. These boats are most common in urban areas.

The Nitro-powered RC boats use nitro-methane for fuel and are not only faster than electric ones, but also have a longer run time. Hence they tend to be a little more expensive.

The Gasoline version is usually larger in size and is powered by 'weed whacker' engines. They have long run times and are less expensive to refuel.

With further modifications to hull shape and engine size these boats can achieve speeds of 55 to 65 mph. Of course the human controller also affects the performance and many organizations hold tournaments and racing championships to see whom the best racer out there is. The models can vary in size and some are as big as three feet in length.

With the formation of the International Model Power Boat association in 1949, RC motorboat racing has grown into a serious sport. The American organization focuses on Nitro and electric powerboat racing. All entries are to be based on IMPBA classifications. Other organizations include the North American Model Boat Association (NAMBA) and its sister enterprise in the UK, the Model Power Boat Association. These concentrate more on model building rather than solely racing. The World Organization for model shipbuilding is Naviga, though similar bodies are found in across the world in Denmark, Holland, Austria, Australia, Sweden, Germany and New Zealand. Clearly RC Power boats have grown into a popular hobby and sport worldwide.

Power Boat Insurance - The Necessity of Boating Life

By : Brent Bonnett

Are you thinking of buying a boat? Do you already own a boat? When figuring out the total costs of your investment don't forget about power boat insurance. If you are trying to avoid this purchase, Don't! Your finance company will make it next to impossible to go with out it and they will demand that you have it, especially if you use it as collateral.

You should always purchase power boat insurance. It is a necessary cost of owning a power boat and the responsible thing to do. It can, in the long or even short run, save you money.

The power boat insurance world can be a complex one. It is basically an unregulated industry varying from state to state. If you have an incomplete understanding of if, it can lead to serious mistakes that could have been avoided if you devoted enough time in examining the various aspects of you, your boat, and by researching the company you are thinking of doing business with.

Be aware! Not all boats are created equal in the eyes of an insurance company.

Power boat insurance can range in accordance with the materials of the boat, the wooden boats increasing rates, and of course the type of boat. I hope you're not surprised when I tell you that racing power boats will command a higher insurance rate.

You will also find that it will be necessary to check out the insurance company and their records. This can be done by checking out the company's credentials with state agencies or visiting your local Better Business Bureau. If you already have a car or house policy with a company, find out their power boat insurance rates and policies.

In order to help you choose what policy you will want to go with and which power boat insurance company to consider, read and understand each companies policy. Will the policy offer comprehensive coverage? Many times after a natural disaster like a hurricane or tornado, many boats were abandoned by their owners because their insurance policy did not provide them with even the money needed to salvage their boats. So be aware of this.

You need to realize that there are various degrees of coverage and make sure to ask questions on what is and what is not covered. If you have a fuel spill are you covered? If you sail off shore, are you covered? Does your policy allow for third person liability coverage? If that person is driving your boat and they have an accident, who is going to pay for the damages to the boat, to the other boat or object, and to the people who were involved? Can the power boat insurance company you are asking provide concrete answers? Is it evasive? Make sure to listen carefully and consider which company provides the best coverage

Another important factor in power boat insurance is figuring out the value of your boat.
An insurance company can provide you with a policy directed towards the agreed-upon true value or the actual cash value. This agreed value will cover the replacement of your power boat if you need to exercise this option. The actual cash value considers the boat in terms of a deprecating factor of around 10%. Most the time you will find that the agreed value will be the best policy.

I hope I gave you an idea on what questions you will need to consider when purchasing power boat insurance. Once you start doing your research, there will be many other questions that will become quite obvious when considering you and your boats particular needs.

If you are interested in purchasing power boat insurance, Brent has a site at Power Boat Insurance There you will find useful articles, news, links and other resources on all your questions about boat insurance. While there, don't forget to get your FREE GUIDE, "Tips, Tricks, and Resources for Financing the Boat of your Dreams!" Go there now, Power Boat Insurance

Buy And Sell Used Boats Now Without Any Hassle

By : Brianna W

Owning a boat for some is an investment, for some a necessity, although for some others it could be mere luxury. No matter what the reason but there is no denying the fact that buying a boat could be an expensive proposition. Notwithstanding, there are many of us who would want to sell our used boat for various reasons. This need has given rise to several online portals and markets where you can get your old boat sold and thereby pave the way to buy a new one. There are a number of boats available online or in the market with different brands. You will find boats in various types as well, for instance, commercial water crafts, ski, air, power, inflatable, pontoon, deck, fishing, houseboats, water jets and many more.

Sounds Interesting...but How to Go About It?

Personal Agents - You could save yourself some time from your tight schedule and probably get in touch with the personal agents. These dedicated agents keep a track of the newly registered boats which are put on sale and also keep you posted through emails. Submit an additional request and participate in boat sale auctions for the purpose of selling your boat.

Online Search - How about getting a boat booked without wasting your time and money? Yes! Make good use of the Internet, search for boats online and check out the desired boat images from different angles. You could also compare prices, various makes and models, etc of other boats on sale.

Advertise - Advertise your boat online, in newspapers or on local television channels. You can also submit images or videos of your old boat that you want to sell

Assistance from Third Party - Seek, if you wish, expert advice on insurance, reviews, financing, transportation, boat values, etc.

Last but not the least, you may visit different marinas, harbors or boat ramps which will have boats on sale.

Finally, Consider Some Points before Buying the Used Boat

* Inspect the boat thoroughly, to ensure whether it is free from any defects.

* Be very careful about rotten planks, if the boat is wooden.

* Some times you may find out that the boat is painted at a few places, make sure that those places are not painted to conceal serious issues.

* Conduct a sea trial to find out how the steering is functioning, if the gear is smooth, etc.

* Do not rush; you may take a few days to go through the survey report of the boat. If the survey report uncovers some minor or major problems, you can ask the vendor to fix it.

* Be extra careful and look out for a reliable source to buy from that could provide you with the maximum information.

* You could also negotiate some compensation on the boat and make sure to check the papers of the boat before fixing the deal.

* The boat you are buying should not have any outstanding debt on it and make sure the transfer of ownership is done under the legal procedure only.

* Once you are thoroughly content, you may sign the acceptance on the sales agreement. Do take all the relevant documentation and proof of ownership from the vendor.

Search for the perfect vessel from the wide range of boat classifieds, one that serves your needs the best. Look out for a market or website that understands the needs of both the buyers and sellers or one which has accurate knowledge about the boat industry. Select the best website which has the most traffic generating frequency and provides maximum and complete information about the used boats for sale by owner.

Tips For Buying a Used Boat

By : Mark Ralph

So you decided to jump in and buy yourself a boat. Congratulations on your decision but before your give them a bag full of cash there are a few things you must do. A proper inspection of the various components and parts of the boat will save you from many hassles, multiple repairs and wasted money.

When buying a used boat, always consider the source of the boat or the parties involved. If you buy a boat from a private party it usually will not come with any type of guarantee or warranty. Buying a boat from a reputable boat dealer typically will come with a warranty and they might even service it for free for a period of time. If you buy a used boat from an online auction site such as Ebay, always make sure that the seller has excellent feedback above 96%.

Properly inspecting the boat is the number one way to safeguard your hard earned money. First remember that this is a used boat and will have some normal wear and tear involved. Look it over carefully and start inspecting the Hull. Look for different colored paint or recently new paint. Look for signs of previous accidents. If you find an area on the hull which looks different than the rest, inspect it more carefully. The best way is by listening carefully as you tap it lightly with a small rubber hammer. What you are listening for is anything which sounds different than the normal solid sound.

Used Boat Motors can either be in very good condition or some can end up being real lemons. Ask the seller if they have any invoices or a record of the boat repairs done on the engine. The best way to test the boat motor is to start it up and hopefully drive the boat around a little. Let the throttle out and see how it responds. While the engine is shutoff do a propeller test by turning it. When turning the propeller, what you are looking for is any type of warping or wobbling. Visually inspect the propeller for any gashes, nicks or chips. Look for any oil or fluid leaks around the gaskets. Look at the mounts on the engine to see if they are in good condition or broken. Inspect any hoses or belts and look to see if they are dried, cracked or worn out. If you are not mechanically inclined then it is best to have a mechanic look the engine over and do a compression check.

Once you have inspected the main parts of the boat the next thing is to inspect the secondary parts. Check any bolted areas or outlets for problems or rust. Search around the cabin areas and open all the cabinets. Look over the upholstery to see the condition of it and if the stitches are intact. Look for any ripped, worn out or mildewed upholstery. If you find several problems or do not feel comfortable with something than maybe you should pass on it and search for another boat.

When buying a large priced item such as a car or a boat, make sure to properly inspect the areas which receive the most wear and tear. The hull, engine and other components must be looked over and tested. A boat will be one of the most expensive purchases you will make so do not be afraid to take your time. Buying a boat from a reputable seller and properly inspecting it will not only save you from needless repairs but will keep you from being stranded on the water.

Purchasing Used Boats - 5 Tips To Keep You From Making Mistakes

By : Abhishek Agarwal

Are you contemplating a boat purchase lately? If you don't know where and how to begin your search for buying the right boat, read on. Perhaps you really don't want to go deep in debt for a new boat, but you are afraid of settling for a used boat. If that is what is bothering you a list of guidelines have been designed which can immensely help you for getting a great used boat for sale.

Below are 5 tips on buying a used boat that will help you make a wise decision.

1. Firstly make sure the dealer you interact with is reliable. Make inquiries about his reputation and ask for references of other satisfied customers he has worked for before. A legitimate businessman has a good service department for his customers. Confirm if your dealer has one or not.

2. Secondly, obtain a warranty. When the boat you are purchasing in good shape warranty might not be much of a problem, if the owner tells you that. To be fair one needs a definite interval of time and use the boat in the waters and see how much it can take.

3. Thirdly, you must get a boat that suits your requirements and not because they offer you a good deal. When you don't get what you look for it gets a lot of disappointment and discontentment. In order to avoid all that bitterness and regret be patient and wait for the right sort of deal that the right boat brings along with it.

4. One of the very common mistakes that people tend to make is overlooking the condition of the boat trailer. A boat trailer is rather expensive to purchase and is absolutely essential if you ever wish to move your boat. This can surely be overlooked if your boat rests on water all the time and you don't need to transport it. Anyways make sure you get a deal that is worth your money if not more.

5. Do a little research on the subject. Confirm whether the asked price is worth the boat or not. Also the price of boats and depreciation go hand in hand which will directly affect the resale value to the buyer's fortune. The original cost is bound to be more than the resale value, which totally depends on the age of your boat.

Lastly, keep in mind that haste makes waste. If you wish to be free of regrets go over the deal several times and do the research. Sometimes a little patience takes you a long way for a great benefit. A boat is a good option to invest in and lets you have all the fun that you ever dreamt of on your boat. So make a wise choice.

Get Low-Cost, High Quality Boats From Used Boat Sales

By :  Andrew Roberts

Purchasing a boat can be a very expensive preposition if you are looking for a brand new boat. The level of investment needed for such a purchase could be beyond the reach of a lot of families in the middle income group. But fulfilling your dream is possible if you could purchase your favourite boat from brokers that deal with used boat sales.

Boats are the ultimate place for spending the much needed vacation with your family for those with a love of the sea. Used boat sales brokers offer boats that are fitted with most of the amenities that are needed in a boat that is used for spending your vacation. This is a major advantage as many new boats will be ill equipped for sailing straight away. So, if you are buying a new boat, you have the extra investment to purchase all these amenities and essentials as well.

The popularity of used boat sales is increasing swiftly and there are many centres and stores that offer this service to the customers. Some of the centres are also involved in repossessed boat sales, which is reselling of boats impounded by government authorities or financial institutions for reasons like non payment of financial dues. Centres that specialise in repossessed boat sale get impounded boats from financial institutions at nominal costs and resell the same at some margin of profit.

If you have decided to buy your boat from a used boat sales centre then make sure that the centre that you approach is a reliable and trustworthy source to buy from. Also make sure that the boat is not having any outstanding debt on it. Get maximum information about the maintenance cost of the boat and about the legal procedures that are needed for the transfer of ownership.

Network Yacht Brokers in Conwy is a great place to find more information on boat sales and to find used boats for sale They also offer a boat share scheme for those unable to make the investment in a purchase.

Boats USA Top 7 Tips For Buying Used Boats & Used Boat Prices

By :  Mark P Andrews

1. Buying a used boat reflects an affordable way to get into the world of boating at substantially lower cost over buying a new boat. More than 60% of first time boat buyers purchase used boats over new boats. If you are new to boating and you are unsure about whether to take it up as a long term interest or you have previously been a boat owner and you want to save money, buying a used boat does in fact make a lot of sense. Most boat owners do in fact look after their marine craft very well indeed and all kinds of reasons abound for why an individual or individuals witsh to sell their yacht or boat, including divorce, illness, urgent bills etc. There is no reason why you should not be able to buy a good used yacht or boat second hand that is just as good, if not better than a brand new vessel. You could indeed save an awful lot of money, many thousands of dollars in many cases.

2. Used boats can offer all of the same very high qualities you would look for in a new boat purchase. Used boat prices too are often substantially less than their new counterparts. Just as much enjoyment can be gained from a used boat compared to a new boat, certainly if it has been well looked after and cared for to a high degree. Whatever the intended purpose of your boat purchase, whether it be deep ocean cruising or fishing, coastal cruising, yacht island hopping, entertaining for friends or business colleagues or simply taking your family and friends out for an enjoyable few hours afloat on rivers, lakes or inland waterways, buying a used boat really has many more advantages to it than you might think, cost being the major concern for many, especially in view of a looming possible slow down in the general business market, now is the perfect opportunity of getting an awesome yacht or boat bargain!

3. Your first port of call should be to think carefully about where you might buy your 'new' used boats from. A licensed boat or yacht broker is a good place to start. Many can actually be found on eBay, but before you go dashing off there to compare specifications and pricing, please read on to find out more information which could help you. Yacht and boat brokers are recommended because of their experience in the market and their wide range of contacts. If they personally do not have the right yacht or boat available right away for you, there's a very good chance that they will know someone that can fit your needs perfectly. Tip, always be prepared to negotiate on the price, if you don't ask and seek to drive a hard bargain which works towards your interests, you could end up paying much more than you really have to. Every yacht or boat seller just like every other seller, no matter what the goods or products on offer, is a motivated and keen seller that wants you to buy from them, knowing that this can lead to further business transactions and recommendations of their services. A yacht or boat broker can also advise you on important aspects such as boat and yacht insurance, mooring fees and availability, extra costs etc to think about etc. Another aspect that they can advise you on is financing options.

4. A question you do want to ask yourself in advance is, how do I intend to use my boat. You will need to choose a compatible boat or yacht which fits, ticks most of the boxes for your own intended purposes. There is nothing worse than buying a boat which does not fit in well with all the purposes that you have in mind. There are plenty of sellers out there that are selling just less than new boats and yachts for this very reason, so you can in fact purchase a 'used' boat which is essentially, to all intents and purposes, brand new, only at a substantially lower cost. So question the seller at length upon the reasons why they are selling their craft. Every answer they give can lower the purchase price for you, as you use their very own answers to turn the deal around in your favor.

5. Once you have found a used boat or yacht that ticks all your boxes, you need to look carefully at the overall condition of the yacht or boat. Getting a knowledgeable friend to look over the yacht or boat goes without saying, certainly careful attention needs to be paid to many factors, not least of all the marine engine that is used upon the vessel. Getting a professional survey done can save you lots of heartache and headaches, make sure to use a professional marine surveyor, this will also aid any insurance claim you may need to make at a later date, if something does go wrong.

6. You can generally tell whether a craft, either a boat or a yacht has been carefully looked after just from it's appearance. If buying online, you can also tell a great deal from the written description of the marine vessel you are interested in. Are there plenty of photographs backing up the description? Does it sound too good to be true? What does the description say about the hull, the age of the craft, the engine, the rigging, the inventory, it's uses etc. If buying on eBay, look at the sellers completed items that have sold and if the individual or company has a very high positive feedback rating. Certainly eBay is a great place to quickly check out the used boat prices for yachts, boats for sale under current market conditions.

7. If you decide that you do want to make a used boat purchase, after comparing used boat prices from boats for sale by owner etc, find out about any unexpected additional costs. There is no point in purchasing a yacht or a boat if doing so takes up so much of your hard earned money that you cannot afford to use her. This is why bargaining and location of the used boat or yacht for sale makes such an important difference. For boats USA, depending on your budget, professional transport can usually be easily arranged to get your used boat or used yacht for sale to you after the deal is completed. You can expect usually to put down a 10% initial deposit. After the deposit has been paid you can then ask to take the boat or yacht out for sea trials and the final balance can then be paid when everything meets to your complete and utter satisfaction.

13 Tips For Selling Your Used Boat

By Gary Tessmer

When selling a boat you need to be aware of special requirements needed to effectively sell your boat. Here are 13 tips that I have found work to assure that the transaction goes smoothly for you.

1. Reach out and touch someone - No one expects you to take out an ad on the Super Bowl to sell your boat, but you do need to spend money if you intend to sell your boat. Determine what you can afford to spend to market your boat and commit to an effective marketing program. Use a combination of the Internet, local shoppers and boat classifieds listings in local papers.

2. Mr. Clean - A clean boat is much closer to sold than a dirty one. It's amazing how much money some boaters will spend to market their boat then they don't even clean it up properly. If your not willing to do it right, pay a professional detailer a few hundred to clean it up right.

3. Whisper Sweet Nothings - Many boaters over look those little things that make a used boat appealing to a used boat buyer. Remember that most new boats don't come with all the frills. These little things can go far in securing a sale for your used boat. Keep in mind that mentioning that you include a radar, fish finder, downriggers etc. often spur a new boat buyer to think twice about the new vs. used market.

4. One Ringy Dingy, Two Ringy Dingy - Have you ever called a seller and found that they weren't home or they had an answering machine. If you are serious about selling your boat, answer the phone. If you're not going to be home, then forward your calls to a cell phone. Don't have a cell phone ... get one! If you don't answer the phone when the prospect is ready to buy, you just wasted a whole lot of money for nothing...

5. the Price is Right - More boaters make mistakes in pricing their boat too high for the market. Do a search on the internet for similar boats and be sure yours has some advantage over the others. It may be price, or it may be features. If it isn't one or the other then you're keeping your boat for another year!

6. Fun, Fun, Fun - When the customer comes out to see the boat, make the experience fun. Have a poster on board with photos of your fun experiences on the boat. People buy based on emotion, so give it to them. If you are selling a fishing boat, don't take all the equipment off the boat, have the rods in the rod holders, have photos of all the trophy fish you caught out for them to see and discuss. Share your experiences with your customer.

7. Say Cheese - If you don't show photos on the internet of your boat, don't bother. Very few people will buy a boat without seeing photos first. Would you look for a boat with just text? Take four photos and have them included in your listing. Photos should be exterior side view, rear shot, helm and interior.

8. That's my line,, and I'm stickin to it - If your boat has had repairs, list them. Every used boat has seen it's share of dings and dents. Ignoring these will only create suspicion amongst your potential buyers. By listing your repairs, you avoid potential blunders later when a survey brings the problem to surface.

9. Cool hand Luke - If you don't have the stomach for people climbing all over your boat, only to criticize the condition or worse yet say nothing, then you need a Boat Broker. Brokers don't have emotional attachments, and they have more available time to meet with potential clients than you do. So if you don't have the stomach for it, hand it off to a cooler hand.

10. Don't be an Average Joe - Every other seller of used boat all say the same thing. My boat has a heater, fish finder, radar, etc. Use words to describe why these things are important. Remember many used boat buyers are inexperienced boaters and many are first time buyers who don't understand what these features do. Use words like "Eagle II fish finders identifies the depth of each fish and comes with temperature gauge and speed control allowing you to control your lure depth and speed" or "Heater provides three minute warm up of interior cabin for early morning or late fall cruising."

11. A Three Hour Tour - If your boat is in the water at the time you are selling, offer to take the potential buyer for a ride. State this in your ad and entice them to come out for a ride. Nothing works better to get the customer emotionally involved with your boat than a free ride.

12. And the Survey Says... - If you've owned your boat for more than 5 years, it is strongly suggested that you have a survey done on the boat before you list it. A survey can point out potential road blocks in the sale of your boat. This is especially true for Yacht and High Performance boats. Lets say you spend $500-$1000 to market your boat only to find out that a potential buy could not get financing because your boat have a problem due to their survey. Not only have you lost your advertising investment, but now you need to make the repairs. Doing a survey first can bring potential problems to the surface.

13. As The World Turns - Every boater who places an ad thinks that it will sell quickly. The reality is that boats take about 3 months to find a partner. That is provided the right person sees the boat. Be patient and most of all, be sure that when you get that opportunity to show your boat you haven't misplaced all the other tips we shared with you.
